Retin-A is a topical form of Vitamin A. Topical means it is applied directly to the skin in a cream, gel or liquid format. Experts are not sure what Retin-A's exact mode of action is, but they believe that it loosens and expels pimples and blackheads to the surface of the skin. Retin-A can also prevent blemishes from coming back.
Many non-prescription skin care products are nothing more than exfoliators. This means that they simply remove surface skin and allow the next layer of tissue to rise to the surface. Retin-A does not promote exfoliation. Instead, the medication works at the skin's cellular level as described above. That gives better results that last longer.
